The Condominium Authority Tribunal (CAT)
CAO introduced an online dispute resolution forum for condo
disputes called the Condominium Authority Tribunal (CAT). The CAT began accepting applications in early November 2017.
Exclusive jurisdiction
The Tribunal will have the exclusive jurisdiction to hear and make
legally binding and enforceable decisions about condo disputes. Only
disputes identified by the government in the regulations can be filed
with CAT.
If you have a type of dispute that is not in the regulations, then you will need to use other existing methods to resolve it.
Records
Disputes about records have been identified as the first type of dispute that can be filed with the CAT.
Appeals
The Divisional Court would hear appeals from Tribunal findings on
questions of law, and existing ways to resolve disputes will still
apply to disputes outside the Tribunal's jurisdiction.
The CAO will provide more information on the CAT in the upcoming months, so refer to their website for updates.
