A fire on a balcony in downtown Kelowna's North End was quickly extinguished Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters and RCMP rushed to The Herons condos, located at 1099 Sunset Dr., about 4:45 p.m.

A witness on scene said it was a barbecue fire on a balcony, but this has not been confirmed.

Castanet has a reporter at the scene and will update the story as more information becomes available.

UPDATE: 5:22 pm
Firefighters say a barbecue cook did the right thing to stop a fire from spreading, Tuesday.

Kelowna Fire Department Cpt. Bruce Bostock says the fire on Sunset Drive was caused by a "barbecue with grease buildup on it. As it warmed up, the grease caught fire."

Bostock says the resident did the right thing – "They contained it, didn't open it up or pour water on it."

"Then they threw baking soda on it, and it was out by the time we arrived."

Because of this, there was no spread of the fire to building.

An alarm evacuated the building, but sprinklers were not activated.
