Art on Sheppard West
Hoarding art has come to Ward 10.
Sheppard Avenue community murals to be unveiled
Media Advisory
October 12, 2016
Councillor James Pasternak (Ward 10 York Centre) will be joined by
local arts organizations and community members to officially unveil new
public art works.
Date: Thursday, October 13
Time: 2 to 4 p.m. (remarks at 3 p.m.)
Location: 700 Sheppard Ave. W.
The new art installations reflect the past, present and future of the
North York area. The mural creation process was led by Toronto
multi-disciplinary artist Beth Dawson.
This project was organized by the STEPS Initiative as part of the PATCH
Project, an outdoor gallery exhibited on construction sites. More
information is available at http://thepatchproject.com/.
These murals were created in partnership with the City of Toronto’s
Cultural Hotspot initiative, which celebrates the arts, culture,
events, food and communities thriving throughout the city.
More information is available at http://www.toronto.ca/culturalhotspot.
The panels
The glossy panels were screwed to the plywood hoarding prior to the
unveiling and will remain on site until the construction is completed.
Since the panels are generic and do not depict anything specific to
Sheppard Ave, they can be easily reused on any construction site.
Costs
In the large scheme of things, the cost of this piece of hoarding
didn't cost either the future condo owners or Toronto's taxpayers that
much even when we add in the cost of the policeman and patrol car
who blocked one lane of traffic during the event.
Yet, these costs must be considered when Police Services are tasked to reduce
taxes and condo units are most often paid for with mortgaged money.
Value
In his remarks, Councillor James Pasternak stated that hundreds of
pedestrians and thousands of vehicles pass by every day. True enough
but I believe that next to no one will notice the panels let alone
realize that they are a city-sponsored art project.
Come out to Sheppard Ave West and see for yourself.
