The new tenement housing units
“It is the most miserable thing to feel ashamed of home.”
― Charles Dickens, Great Expectations
When downtown one-bedroom condos are going for $300,000 to $400,000 how
can a someone buy a "starter-home"? The costs are enormous.
Bringing in a roommate may mean renting a "private space" which may be no
more than a mattress on the floor with curtains for privacy.
Putting three-families in a three-floor house is one thing; putting
unrelated people—who are not in a relationship—into a tiny one-bedroom,
or a one-bedroom with den, condo unit is a step back to the depressing tenement buildings of old.
Putting six or more university students into an illegal rooming house
for a slumlord's private gain is not the type of city "planning" that
is in our society's best interests.
