YCC # 42 elects Board of Directors

The campaign
As soon as the owners walked out of the court room, the different factions started loudly insulting each other. The court officials had to order them to be quiet as they were disturbing the proceedings in an adjoining court room.

The election campaign was fought for proxies with the different candidates, and their supporters, going door to door urging the owners to sign proxies.

Leaflets
Leaflets proclaiming the different factions election promises were freely distributed by four different slates, two individuals and one satirist.

Promises
In their leaflets, the different slates promised the following:
1.
Cut the monthly common element fees by 15-27%.
2.
Increased transparency and accountability.
3.
Increase owners participation.
4.
Hire Mark Cianfarani as property manager. His father held the job prior to 1996. (The winning slate did not make this promise.)
5.
Improve finances so CMHC will insure mortgages on corporation units.

The two independent candidates did not make any specific promises.

The election
On 27 September 2012, in an election that was monitored by a retired Justice, YCC # 42 (consisting of 897 units in 320, 330 and 340 Dixon Road) elected its first board of directors in over six years.

There were three Intelligarde security officers and ten uniformed police officers to provide security.

Out of a possible 897 units, 611 voted; 77 in person and 534 by proxy so the minimun requirement of 33 1/3% required by the bylaws and rules was met. (At past elections about 40 owners cast ballots.) Geoff Pacey chaired the meeting.

There were two elections. The first election, with six candidates, was for the director elected only by the resident-owners.

It took six hours to count and tabulate the proxies for both elections.

Results
The first election was won by:
• Shah Jahan Khan  137 votes
• Franca Papagna     109 votes  (runner-up)
• Spoiled ballots         12

A second election was then held, in which all of the unsuccessful candidates from the first election, four in total, were free to run for the remaining four positions. Three of the candidates took advantage of this second opportunity.

The second election had 18 candidates running for four positions.

The successful candidates were:
Anver  Karim 320 votes 2 year term
Safdar Sardar 287 votes 2 year term
Waqar Khan 283 votes 1 year term
Ataul Haq Malick 278 votes 1 year term

It was a complete sweep for the slate that called themselves the"United Home Owners Association YCC #42".
