Condos are being targeted
A director at a downtown Toronto condo wrote:
"This person broke into the lockers of the garage levels of my condo
recently.
Luckily he was arrested on a unrelated matter and he is now
under court custody. According to the police he is part of a group that
repeatedly targets storage lockers at many condos in the King West and
waterfront neighbourhoods, and most likely working with a female
accomplice.
They sometimes dress like construction workers or delivery
people to avoid suspicion and frequents buildings to better gain
familiarity within the building.
Keep an eye out on this guy."
As more and more city dwellers reside in condominiums, more and more
thieves target condo residents. They go where the opportunities are.
Underground garages
They gain entry into the underground garages where they:
1. steal cars
2. break into cars and steal valuables.
3. steal licence plates.
4. steal bicycles.
5. break into lockers.
6. The homeless look for a place to sleep.
Residential floors
Other criminals and people with mental issues will slip into a condo
behind a resident and then head for the elevators. Sometimes, they
pretend to be fast-food delivery drivers.
Once they are up on the residential floors, they will test the door
handles to see which ones are unlocked. Women tend to leave their
purses by the front door.
Far too many condo residents leave their door open, even when they are
not at home. For some reason they think that their buidings are secure.
Far too often, they are not.
Boards hide problems
Far too many condo boards will not inform their residents when there
have been criminal activity either on the property or in the
neighbourhood so unfortunately, you can't depend on them.
